Hi WISE DC!
Hope everyone has enjoyed watching the cherry blossoms bloom in the District!
Our next event will be a virtual articles club. For those who have not joined us for an articles club before, it is similar to a book club - but easier :) We've selected a handful of articles around a topic. You read them and come to the event ready to discuss and share your thoughts! These gatherings are a great opportunity to learn about a topic, hear the insights of others, and get to know the fabulous women of WISE DC! This will also be a great opportunity to meet our new WISE DC Co-Leader, Katie Fackler!
Please register below so we can send you the Zoom link and a PDF of all the articles.
Date: Thursday April 29th @ 6pm
Location: Zoom
Topic:
Climate change is a big issue today, and how we consume, eat and invest play a role in contributing to or preventing it. The age old debate remains – do we divest or stay invested in dirty companies for the sake of engagement? Which one is more impactful? A recent WSJ article analyzed the carbon emissions of an electric vehicle vs a traditional car – over the long run there is a difference but how should we feel about ‘clean’ technologies that are really carbon intensive to create? Let’s discuss how we should weigh these decisions – personally and as a society – and what each person views as the best path forward.
Part of the solution may be innovative financing that encourages nations to conserve critical ecosystems that impact climate and biodiversity or a ‘carbon bank’ to pay farmers for trapping carbon in the ground or saving the whales. What other solutions to climate change have you heard of and which are the most promising? One economist feels we aren’t pricing the cost of carbon and its impact on climate change accurately. Are there better ways to price carbon, and to prevent the most vulnerable from bearing the brunt of the impact on climate change?
Look forward to chatting with and learning from all of you!
